From dental assisting classes to permitted duties

  1. 1

    Check your future work state

Missouri law places dental assistants under a dentist's direct supervision. Kansas law allows specified supervised services by unlicensed staff and sets limits on duties; confirm the rules for your intended workplace.

  2. 2

    Prepare the program application

MCC's admissions page lists prerequisite coursework, a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA, a bootcamp and an information session. It gives conflicting deadline dates, so get the current cutoff from the program coordinator.

  3. 3

    Build supervised clinical skills

Follow the MCC handbook for clinical and radiation safety requirements. Students must demonstrate radiography skills on manikins before exposing patients to ionizing radiation.

  4. 4

    Take the national examinations

MCC schedules DANB's Infection Control and Radiation Health and Safety exams at the end of fall, followed by General Chairside at the end of spring. Passing the required examinations leads to the CDA credential.

  5. 5

    Request Missouri expanded functions permits

For expanded duties in Missouri, follow 20 CSR 2110-2.120: document the qualifying exam and training route, hold accepted BLS certification and apply to the Dental Board. Wait for the appropriate permit before performing those duties.

Dental assistant jobs and wages in the KC metro

The May 2025 BLS OEWS estimates counted 2,470 dental assistant jobs in the Kansas City, MO-KS metro area. For occupation 31-9091, the median wage was $23.17 an hour, or $48,190 a year. You can view the occupation in the BLS metro table. The median describes the midpoint of reported wages across workers, including those with experience.

BLS describes chairside support, instrument preparation, patient records and appointment scheduling as common duties. When you review a Kansas City job, ask which duties it includes and whether it calls for CDA certification or Missouri expanded-function permits. Compare hours and benefits alongside the posted pay.

Dental assisting tuition and financial help

MCC's program page publishes in-district tuition of $6,930 for the certificate and $9,450 for the A.A.S. These figures exclude additional course fees and supplies. Your residency category changes tuition, so request a current written bill.

Use MCC's FAFSA steps to seek federal aid and ask whether you qualify for a Pell Grant. Veterans and eligible family members can check GI Bill eligibility and confirm program coverage with the college. Before paying, ask an American Job Center about WIOA funding through the Full Employment Council or Workforce Partnership. You can also ask a dental employer about tuition reimbursement and any required work commitment.

Ask before choosing a dental assisting program

  • Is the dental assisting program currently CODA accredited?
  • Which application deadline applies to the next June cohort?
  • How much do my residency rate and required fees add up to?
  • Where will I complete radiography and clinical rotations?
  • Are all three DANB examinations included in the bill?
  • Which Missouri expanded-function categories does my training cover?
  • How will the weekday clinical schedule affect my job?

How to check a school

Common questions

How do MCC's certificate and associate degree differ?

MCC's application page describes a one-year certificate and a two-year A.A.S. Both include the same dental assisting courses; the difference is the general education requirements. The dental assisting sequence runs from June through May. Ask an advisor which credits you already hold and how they fit your plan.

Does graduating make me a Certified Dental Assistant?

You must also pass the required national examinations. The MCC handbook explains the DANB exam process and reminds students that passing college labs and clinics does not ensure an exam pass. Ask when to submit exam applications, what fees are covered and what happens if you need another attempt.

What do Missouri expanded-function dental assistants need?

Missouri's rule requires a Board-issued permit for the expanded-function category. One route combines DANB certification with graduation and competency testing in a CODA-accredited program. Other routes use specified exams and Board-approved training. Accepted BLS certification is also required; online-only BLS does not meet the rule.

What are the dental radiography rules in Missouri and Kansas?

Kansas law permits dental x-ray work under a licensed dentist's or physician's supervision without a separate dental license under that act. Missouri's dental assistant rule does not establish a separate x-ray permit; it prohibits assistants from diagnosing or interpreting radiographs. You still need supervised training and safe equipment practices.

Do Kansas dental assistants use Missouri expanded-function permits?

A Missouri permit applies to Missouri duties. In Kansas, K.S.A. 65-1423 defines services unlicensed staff may perform under a dentist's supervision and prohibits certain procedures. Coronal scaling has additional training and experience requirements. Ask your Kansas employer to identify the rules for each assigned task before treating patients.
