From nail classes to a manicurist license

  1. 1

    Compare the two states

A Missouri school course must include at least 400 hours for the manicurist classification. Kansas lists 350 hours in its practitioner application, so ask the board about your planned training state and work state. Missouri course law; Kansas application checklist.

  2. 2

    Verify your chosen campus

Check the legal school name and active license before making a payment. The Missouri license lookup is the place to recheck the license numbers shown under these programs.

  3. 3

    Read the enrollment terms

Request a dated quote, start date and weekly class plan. Transformed's curriculum displays both 400-hour and 600-hour totals, so have admissions identify the outline covered by your contract.

  4. 4

    Finish training and practice

Missouri requires at least 50 classroom hours before nail students provide services to school customers. Your course must also cover areas such as sanitation, anatomy and chemical use. Missouri manicuring curriculum requirements.

  5. 5

    Apply for your examinations

Missouri requires an exam satisfactory to the board after the required training. Summit's exam section describes written and practical nail tests through Prov; confirm current instructions before booking. Missouri examination eligibility.

Manicurist and pedicurist jobs and wages in the metro

BLS reported 1,570 manicurist and pedicurist jobs (SOC 39-5092) in the Kansas City, MO-KS metro area in May 2025. Median wages were $17.40 per hour and $36,180 annually. See the BLS metro estimates. The figures describe employed workers across the area, rather than a new graduate's likely starting pay.

The OEWS survey does not count self-employed workers. If your plan involves renting a booth or opening a nail business, build a separate budget for rent, products, insurance and other expenses. When reviewing an employee position, ask how the salon handles weekly hours, tips, service commissions and supplies. These employment estimates do not count current vacancies.

Published nail school costs and funding

House of Heavilin's July 2026 catalog lists $4,825 tuition plus $100 registration. Academy of Beauty Professionals' September catalog lists $5,529.43 tuition and a $5,989 total before its separate application fee. Compare each school's complete bill, including testing and supplies.

House of Heavilin and Academy of Beauty Professionals say federal aid is unavailable for their nail courses, so do not budget around Pell funding there. House of Heavilin lists a payment plan. Legacy publishes scholarships and Vocational Rehabilitation funding for qualified students. Ask your local American Job Center, through the Full Employment Council or Workforce Partnership, to review WIOA options for the exact course. Veterans should verify program approval before using GI Bill benefits.

What to ask before paying for nail training

  • Which hour total is written into my enrollment agreement?
  • Is there an open seat in the next nail class?
  • What days must I attend classroom and salon sessions?
  • Are nail products, tools, books and exam supplies included?
  • What payment plan or scholarship can I apply for?
  • Who files my training records for the Missouri exams?
  • What happens to my deposit if my start date changes?

How to check a school

Common questions

How many hours do I need for a Missouri nail license?

The school route requires at least 400 training hours for the manicurist classification under Missouri law. An apprenticeship is a different route with an 800-hour minimum. You must also meet the board's eligibility and examination requirements. Ask your school to explain the training total, attendance rules and exam paperwork before you sign an agreement.

Are Kansas nail technician hours different from Missouri's?

Yes. The Kansas board's application checklist lists 350 hours for manicure training, while Missouri's school requirement is 400 hours. Kansas also requires a practitioner application, training verification and completion of its board exams. If you intend to study in one state and work in the other, ask the receiving board to explain its licensing process first.

Can FAFSA pay for a short nail technology course?

Check the specific program. House of Heavilin's July 2026 catalog says Title IV aid is unavailable for its nail course because of its length. Academy of Beauty Professionals also says its Nail Technology course is ineligible for federal financial aid. Ask about payment terms and outside funding, and get any award confirmed before relying on it to cover tuition.

Can I train part time while working?

Legacy Nail Academy advertises full-time and part-time attendance, with start-anytime classes after paperwork is completed. Academy of Beauty Professionals' Missouri catalog lists nail instruction at 20 hours per week. Ask for your actual attendance days, salon practice hours and make-up policy. Published weekly hours alone do not tell you which work shifts you can keep.
