Check the entry documents
PTS requires applicants to be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or equivalent. JCCC also requires health screening and BLS documentation for its clinical pathway.
3
Plan for clinical attendance
MCC publishes 100 clinical hours in addition to classroom training. Ask about site placement, travel and daytime availability before choosing a section.
4
Complete the required procedures
Concorde requires at least 30 completed venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures during lab training. Other programs and exam organizations set their own requirements, so request the procedure log for your track.

Arrange your national examination
Mid-America prepares students for NHA's CPT exam and charges its application and exam fees separately from tuition. Confirm who registers you, what eligibility evidence you need and which fees your school covers.
Phlebotomist jobs and pay around Kansas City
The BLS May 2025 OEWS estimates report 840 phlebotomist jobs (SOC 31-9097) in the Kansas City, MO-KS metro area. Median pay was $22.17 per hour and $46,110 per year. These figures describe workers across the metro, including both states, rather than starting pay for a new graduate.
Use the figures to weigh tuition against your own budget. They do not count current job openings or promise a particular offer. When comparing positions, ask about weekly hours, early shifts, weekend duties, benefits and the national certification the employer accepts.
Published phlebotomy costs and ways to pay
Concorde's 2026 cost sheet lists $1,570 tuition and $1,595 total. Mid-America publishes $1,650 tuition plus $25 registration, with its national exam fee separate. Compare these with the fees and included items in each row.
Ask your local American Job Center about WIOA funding through Workforce Partnership in Kansas or training support through Missouri's Full Employment Council. PTS accepts third-party sponsorships, which may help if an employer agrees to pay. Confirm course eligibility before committing funds. FAFSA/Pell eligibility and GI Bill coverage depend on the specific program; Concorde excludes this short diploma from federal and VA aid. JCCC's continuing education scholarship fund currently has a funding pause.
Do I need a Missouri or Kansas phlebotomy license?
Neither state licenses phlebotomy technicians, according to JCCC's professional licensure table. National certification is a separate credential that employers may request. BLS notes that some employers prefer professional certification and that requirements vary by organization. Ask a prospective employer which exam credential it accepts before you pay for a course.
How long are local phlebotomy classes?
Published lengths vary by the training format. PTS lists 48 classroom hours, while MCC requires 57 hours plus 100 clinical hours. The calendar can extend beyond classroom dates when an externship follows. Ask for a schedule that shows every lab, clinical shift and required assessment, especially if you need to arrange child care or adjust work hours.
Will every course place me in an externship?
No. Kansas City School of Phlebotomy says its CPT classes do not include an externship, while its PLB route offers clinical experience subject to eligibility and additional fees. JCCC includes a 100-hour clinical externship. Before registering, get the placement process in writing and check whether you must be available during normal weekday working hours.
Which phlebotomy certification exam can I take?
The exam route depends on your course and the certifier's eligibility rules. MCC aligns its class with ASCP requirements. Concorde names AMCA, NCCT and NHA options and covers a graduate's first AMCA attempt. Completing a class and earning national certification are separate steps. Have the school identify the exact exam, required procedures and application documents before you begin.
Can I use federal aid for a short phlebotomy course?
Check the exact program rather than assuming the college's general aid policy applies. Concorde's cost disclosures exclude its phlebotomy diploma from federal financial aid and VA programs. Workforce Partnership offers training support for eligible participants. Ask its staff to confirm both your eligibility and the course's funding status before you sign an enrollment agreement.
